The Basics of Grief:
A 4-Hour Foundational Training for Therapists

Live Online β€’ January 31st β€’ 8:00 AM–12:00 PM PST β€’ 4 CE Hours
Self-paced training will be available in February

Why This Training Matters

Most graduate programs offer little formal training in grief, leaving clinicians to learn on the job β€” often while sitting with clients experiencing some of life’s most painful transitions. The Basics of Grief fills that gap with a comprehensive, clinically grounded introduction to how grief works, how it shows up, and how to support clients through it.

This course is ideal for:

  • Therapists at any stage of practice seeking a stronger grasp of grief theory

  • Clinicians who want to understand the full range of grief responses and presentations

  • Providers who work with children, teens, adults, families, or couples

  • Anyone who has ever thought, β€œI wish I had more tools to help this grieving client.”

  • Understand the spectrum of grief experiences β€” anticipatory, ambiguous, disenfranchised, traumatic, cumulative, complicated, secondary losses, chronic sorrow, and more.
Gain clarity on how to assess what your client is experiencing and why it matters clinically.

  • Explore foundational and contemporary models including:

    • Dual Process Model

    • Continuing Bonds Theory

    • Meaning-Making and Reconstruction Frameworks

    • Worden's Tasks of Grief

Learn how to integrate these theories into treatment planning, pacing, and session structure.

  • Grief is not just emotional. Learn to assess its impact across:

    • Cognitive

    • Emotional

    • Physical

    • Social

    • Spiritual

    • Occupational

    • Behavioral

    • Psychological

You’ll receive tools and language to help clients understand what they’re experiencing β€” and reduce the self-judgment that often accompanies grief.

  • Support clients in recognizing regrets, resentments, and unspoken appreciations.
Learn interventions to help them bring compassionate closure, develop meaning, and move toward healing without forcing β€œletting go.”

  • Walk away with practical tools you can use immediately, including:

    • Psychoeducational language, worksheets, and activities

    • Narrative and expressive interventions

    • Resource lists for ongoing support

These tools help clients access grounding, expression, ritual, and stabilization β€” all essential for grief work.
