A Clinical Training on Traumatic Grief

Some losses don’t just bring grief; they shatter a person’s sense of safety, meaning, and identity.

When death is sudden, violent, or unexpected, grief often becomes something more complex. Clients may feel overwhelmed, disoriented, or stuck—replaying what happened, searching for answers, or struggling to make sense of a world that no longer feels predictable.

As therapists, we’re asked to hold both trauma and grief at the same time.

This training is designed to help you do exactly that.

About the Training

Traumatic Grief in Practice: Tools for Complex Loss is a comprehensive, clinically grounded training that equips therapists with the skills to understand and support clients experiencing traumatic grief.

You will learn how to recognize the unique ways trauma appears within grief and respond with clarity, confidence, and compassion. This course focuses on losses that are:

  • Sudden or unexpected

  • Violent or life-threatening

  • Stigmatized, including suicide and substance-related deaths

What you’ll learn

  • Develop a deeper understanding of how trauma and grief intersect, and why some losses are experienced as profoundly destabilizing.

  • Understand how the suddenness, violence, or stigma of a death influences the course of grief and the ways it presents in clients.

  • Explore the emotional, relational, and societal complexities that accompany these types of loss, including shame, blame, and unanswered questions.

  • Understand how clients may experience intrusive imagery, meaning-making struggles, and a loss of safety, and learn strategies to respond therapeutically.

  • Examine how systemic oppression, cultural context, and access to support shape the experience and expression of traumatic grief.

A wooden desk with a closed laptop, a notepad with a pen, a stack of white notebooks, a small cup and saucer, a glass vase with a purple flower, a modern table lamp, and a chair in front of the desk.

Why This Training Matters

Traumatic grief can feel overwhelming—not just for clients, but for clinicians too. Without a clear framework, it is easy to feel unsure how to intervene, what to prioritize, or how to help clients move forward when the loss itself feels unbearable.

This training provides both structure and nuance, helping you:

  • Understand what you are seeing in the room

  • Respond in ways that feel grounded and intentional

  • Support clients without rushing or pathologizing their grief
